Forensic Sciences and Criminology in Turkey

When we stayed in the library until midnight for a group project at university and realized that we had uploaded the wrong file for a presentation, my friends and I had a panicked laughing fit; it was as if we had misanalyzed a crime scene. Even that chaos sparked my interest in forensic sciences and criminology. Meeting this field in Turkey is like stepping into a puzzle that is much more exciting than that chaos.

What are Forensic Sciences? Differences with Criminology

When we think of forensic sciences, we usually think of CSI scenes, but the reality is a bit more detailed. Forensic sciences enable the investigation of a crime using scientific methods. There are many sub-branches such as DNA analysis, ballistics, toxicology, forensic psychiatry. Criminology is a more theoretical field; it examines the causes of crime, the psychology of the criminal and its effects on society.

Simply put:
Forensic sciences try to understand the “how” of a crime, while criminology tries to understand the “why”. When they work together, they contribute greatly to both crime solving and crime prevention.

Forensic Sciences and Criminology Education in Turkey

In Turkey, interest in these fields is increasing. Both state universities and foundation universities have started to offer these programs within their own structures. Generally, these departments are located under the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Law or Faculty of Health Sciences.

Programs usually last 4 years and include theoretical courses as well as practical laboratory work. You gain practical knowledge especially in courses such as forensic toxicology and criminal laboratory techniques. Some universities also offer internship opportunities to students in cooperation with forensic medicine institutions and police departments.

Course content includes the following:

  • Criminalistics
  • Techniques of crime scene investigation
  • Psychology of crime
  • Judicial ethics and law

There are also English programs for international students, but they are mostly conducted in Turkish.

Best Universities and Programs (2025 Current List)

If you are thinking “Where should I study?”, here are some of the most prominent universities in forensic sciences and criminology in Turkey as of 2025:

1. Ankara University – Institute of Forensic Sciences
It is one of the oldest institutions in Turkey in this field. It offers forensic sciences education at master’s and doctoral level. In addition to theoretical knowledge, there are also very strong laboratory facilities.

2. Istanbul University – Criminology Master’s Program
The program offers a sociology and law-based approach. It focuses on crime analysis, criminal justice systems and societal impacts.

3. Hacettepe University – Forensic Sciences Undergraduate Program
One of the few universities offering a 4-year undergraduate program. Graduates can easily find jobs in both public and private sectors.

4. Üsküdar University – Forensic Sciences and Criminology
It draws attention with its special structure combining psychology and forensic sciences. Students have the chance to practice directly in forensic medicine and psychology laboratories.

When choosing a program, I recommend you pay attention to the following:

  • Language of instruction (Turkish or English?)
  • Number of applied courses
  • Cooperating institutions (Forensic Medicine Institute, Police, etc.)
  • Graduates’ employment rate

If you want to enrich the content, you can review the program details on YÖK Atlas.

Entry Requirements and Application Process

If you want to apply to Forensic Science or Criminology programs in Turkey, the process is generally similar to other undergraduate programs. However, there are some critical points. It is especially important that the documents are complete and on time. I forgot the English translation of the transcript in my first application, I struggled for days.

Applications for Undergraduate Program

Applications at undergraduate level are generally open to international diplomas recognized by YÖK. If you did not attend high school in Turkey, here are the documents you need to have:

  • High school diploma (and notarized Turkish translation)
  • Transcript
  • Passport photocopy
  • Turkish proficiency certificate (for some universities)
  • Foreign national student exam (YÖS) results or international exams such as SAT/ACT

Applications usually open in June-July every year. However, if you work with Road to Study application consultancy, you can manage this process much more easily and correctly. They are especially helpful in terms of document compliance and university selection.

Master’s and Doctoral Programs

If you completed your bachelor’s degree in another country and want to pursue a master’s degree in Turkey, you will need the following documents:

  • Bachelor’s degree diploma and transcript (English or Turkish)
  • Letter of intent (Your motivation is very important, you must write it yourself)
  • Letters of reference
  • Academic proficiency exam (ALES or GRE)
  • Language certificate (TOEFL, IELTS or Turkish proficiency)

Applications are usually accepted through the university’s own website. The terms of each program can vary, so it’s good to start researching early.

Career Opportunities and Job Opportunities for Graduates

What can you do when you finish this department? Answer: Quite a lot! There are various career paths for graduates in Turkey and internationally. Some graduates even work in private criminal laboratories, while others join the police departments directly.

Public Sector

Forensic science graduates can work in institutions such as the Forensic Medicine Institute, General Directorate of Security and Ministry of Justice in Turkey. There is a serious need for personnel especially in the fields of crime scene investigation, criminal laboratory and forensic medicine.

Criminology graduates can work in prison enforcement agencies, rehabilitation centers and social services. Students who double major in psychology or sociology have more advantages.

Private Sector and the International Field

Private criminal laboratories, forensic accounting companies, cyber security firms are also very attractive. It is even possible to apply for a job through the Europass system if you have received education in this field in European countries.

For graduates who want to work abroad, internship and job opportunities are also offered in international organizations such as Europol and Interpol. To apply to these institutions, a master’s degree and a foreign language (especially English, French) are generally required.

Why Should You Study Forensic Sciences and Criminology in Turkey? Personal Observations

OK, Turkey offers education in this field, but if you are asking “why should I study here?”, let me tell you a few things from my own experience. Turkey is a very special bridge between East and West, both culturally and academically.

I visited a forensic medicine center in Istanbul; it was really equipped to international standards. Students used to go to the incident one-on-one and prepare a report. I think this practice-oriented system is very valuable in terms of reinforcing theoretical knowledge.

Also the cost of living is much more affordable than in Europe. A friend of mine is studying forensic sciences in Germany, paying 700 euros just for rent. I can get the same education here for a quarter of the price. There is a significant difference in food, transportation and accommodation.

Cultural diversity and hospitality are also very different. Being a student in Turkey is not only an academic experience, but also a life experience. Every day you learn something new, taste a new food, make a new friend.
