What Are Double Major and Minor Programs?

A double major is a program that allows you, as a student, to earn two bachelor’s degrees at the same time. This means you could study both law and psychology and graduate with a diploma in both fields. This option is a great opportunity, especially for those with diverse career goals. However, there is, of course, an academic requirement; generally, students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher can apply.

A minor, on the other hand, is a bit more flexible. It’s not a second diploma, but it allows you to gain expertise in a second field. For example, if you’re studying computer engineering, you could take graphic design as a minor, and this specialization will be listed on your transcript. The GPA requirement is slightly lower, usually around 2.5.

To summarize briefly:
Double Major = two diplomas.
Minor = one diploma, but two specializations.

These programs offer a significant advantage, especially for international students considering studying in Turkey, in terms of adding flexibility to their career plans and gaining skills in more than one field.

You can review the official regulations for these programs in detail on the relevant YÖK page.

Which Universities Offer Double Majors?

Not every university offers a double major program (ÇAP). Therefore, it’s important for students planning to pursue a double major during their university education to choose universities that provide this opportunity. Below is a list of some universities that offer double major opportunities:

  • Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi
  • Manisa Celal Bayar Üniversitesi
  • Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi
  • İstanbul Üniversitesi
  • Çukurova Üniversitesi
  • Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart Üniversitesi
  • İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi
  • Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa Üniversitesi
  • Kocaeli Üniversitesi
  • Anadolu Üniversitesi
  • Eskişehir Osmangazi Üniversitesi
  • Aksaray Üniversitesi
  • Bilecik Şeyh Edebali Üniversitesi

These universities allow students to diversify their careers by receiving education in different disciplines.

When Can You Start a Double Major?

I come across this question a lot: “Can I start a double major right away?”
The answer: No, you need to be a little patient.

Generally, applications for double major programs can be made at the end of the 1st year, meaning when you are moving into your 2nd year. This is because universities want to see that the applying student has reached a certain level of achievement. This means you need to focus solidly on your first-year courses.

Some universities accept applications up to the beginning of the 3rd year at the latest, but applications close after that. Minor applications work similarly, but there might be a bit more flexibility regarding the timing.

Application Process and Requirements

  • Applications are generally evaluated based on your grade point average (GPA).
  • A minimum GPA of 3.00 at the end of the first year is required for a double major, and 2.50 for a minor.
  • Some universities have enrollment quotas, so applying early is advantageous.

Graduation Requirements

For a double major, you must successfully complete all the required courses for both departments. Some courses may overlap, but don’t let that fool you; the extra course load requires serious time management. Graduation is possible only after you have fulfilled all the obligations for both departments.

For a minor, graduating from your main department is sufficient; the minor program is marked as “completed” on your transcript.

What Are the Options for Double Major and Minor Fields?

Universities in Turkey offer a wide variety of options for double majors and minors. Of course, pursuing a double major between certain departments is easier or more popular than others.

The Most Popular Department Combinations

  • Business Administration + International Relations
  • Computer Engineering + Electrical-Electronics Engineering
  • Psychology + Sociology
  • Law + Public Administration

These combinations are preferred both for their overlapping course content and for career compatibility.

Examples for STEM, Humanities, and Equal-Weight Students

  • STEM: Computer Eng. + Mathematics / Software Eng. + Industrial Eng.
  • Humanities: Turkish Language and Literature + History / Journalism + Radio and Television
  • Equal-Weight: Psychology + Business Administration / Law + International Relations

Each university’s double major directive can be different. While a double major between some departments may not be possible, others may offer an extensive list. That’s why it’s crucial to get in touch with the academic advisors at your university early on.

Which Universities Offer Double Major and Minor Programs?

In Turkey, almost all well-established and modern universities offer double major (ÇAP) and minor (YANDAL) opportunities. However, the scope of the program, application requirements, and department options can vary from one university to another. Below, I wanted to show how the system works with a few examples from both public and foundation (private) universities.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi

At Üsküdar Üniversitesi, the double major and minor program, allows undergraduate students to enroll in a second bachelor’s or associate’s degree program at the same time. This opportunity is offered in many fields such as psychology, sociology, engineering, and health sciences. The programs are especially designed for high-achieving students.

İstanbul Beykent Üniversitesi

Beykent Üniversitesi provides students with a multifaceted academic foundation through its double major and minor opportunities. Combinations are possible in different fields like law, architecture, business, and engineering. The application and registration process is quite user-friendly.

İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi

At Bilgi Üniversitesi, the double major allows students to pursue an undergraduate education in a second field. The program stands out with its flexible structure, which particularly appeals to international students. They offer the convenience of applying through their online system.

İstinye Üniversitesi

İstinye Üniversitesi provides its students with the flexibility to pursue a double major and a minor simultaneously. However, according to regulations, it is not possible to enroll in two different double major programs at the same time. There are frequently preferred combinations between the health and engineering faculties.

İstanbul Aydın Üniversitesi

Aydın Üniversitesi’s double major and minor programs allow students to gain competence in different academic fields. It stands out with its wide range of departments and counseling support.

İstanbul Üniversitesi

İstanbul Üniversitesi, one of Turkey’s most established universities, allows students to apply for double major or minor programs in their second or third year. Ample opportunities are available for successful students.

Kadir Has Üniversitesi

Kadir Has Üniversitesi offers its students the opportunity to earn a second bachelor’s degree with its double major programs. Interdisciplinary transitions are possible between different fields such as engineering, law, and communication.

Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar Üniversitesi

For those who want to specialize in the health field, Acıbadem Üniversitesi offers double major and minor opportunities in its medicine and health sciences departments. Students can also benefit from these programs in departments where the language of instruction is English.

Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli Üniversitesi

At Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli Üniversitesi, successfully completing a double major program results in two diplomas, while completing a minor results in a certificate. The social sciences and education faculties are quite active in this area.

These universities are just examples. Dozens of universities in Turkey offer students double major and minor opportunities. However, since university directives change from time to time, it is very important to check the current regulations before applying.

Can You Do Multiple Double Majors?

The answer to this question is a bit complicated: Yes, it’s technically possible, but quite difficult.

Regulations and Limitations

Some universities only allow students to pursue one double major and one minor at the same time. Some even ask students to choose just one, citing the course load. You can apply for a minor after starting a double major, but this requires high academic achievement and compliance with the university’s directive.

Doing two different double majors is very rarely accepted. Besides, not every student can handle such an intense program. From what I’ve seen, most students end up dropping one due to the course load.

Is There a Fee for the Double Major Program?

This is one of the most important questions, especially for international students, as taking extra courses can mean extra fees.

Fee Status at Public Universities

At public universities, double major and minor programs are generally free of charge. You don’t make any additional payments beyond the tuition fee you pay for your registered department. Only if you need to take some courses in summer school might a small fee be requested for that.

Additional Costs at Foundation Universities

At foundation universities, the situation is a bit more complex. While some universities offer the double major program with your existing scholarship rate, some only accept students with a 25% scholarship. This means if you want to do a double major while on a full scholarship, your scholarship might be reduced, or an extra payment could be requested. Therefore, you must review the university’s scholarship directive before enrolling.

The Road to Study consulting team can research the fee and scholarship status for you at the universities you apply to.

The Impact of a Double Major and Minor on Your Career

I must say this clearly: whether in Turkey or another country, after you graduate, the double major/minor information on your CV will put you one step ahead in every job or master’s program you apply for.

Making a Difference on Your CV

When you do a double major or a minor, you are documenting your expertise in two fields. This particularly catches the eye in international job applications. Employers prefer graduates who can bring different disciplines together and think multi-dimensionally.

For example, someone who studied psychology + business administration could be a much stronger candidate in the human resources field. Or a combination like engineering + economics shows that you possess both technical and analytical thinking skills.

Master’s Degree Opportunities in Turkey and Abroad

Many students find it easier to get accepted into master’s programs after completing a double major. Universities in the US and Europe, in particular, are interested when they see information like “double major” or “minor” in an application file. In Turkey as well, a double major is a significant plus when applying to master’s programs at universities like Boğaziçi, METU, and Koç.
