History and Vision of the University

Yıldız Technical University (YTÜ) was founded in 1911 in Istanbul as the “Kondüktör Mekteb-i Alisi.” With a long-standing tradition in technical education, Yıldız Technical University took its current name and structure in 1982 under Law No. 2809. With a legacy spanning from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, it is a leading institution in engineering and architecture. Led by Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Yılmaz, YTÜ operates under the motto “Shaping the Future with Science and Technology.” Its vision is to become a globally leading research university. Its mission is to educate innovative, critically thinking individuals who contribute to society. With approximately 36,000 students (YÖK Atlas, 2022-2023), Yıldız Technical University ranks in the 801-1000 band in Times Higher Education 2025. YTÜ combines over a century of experience with modern science.

Education

Yıldız Technical University offers academic diversity through 10 faculties: Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical-Electronics, Civil, Chemistry-Metallurgy, Arts and Sciences, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Naval Architecture and Maritime, Arts and Design, and Education. There are more than 80 undergraduate and over 150 graduate programs. Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Architecture are particularly prominent. The academic staff of approximately 2,000 faculty members possesses international experience. The education model combines theoretical and practical learning, and some programs are offered in English. More than 200 laboratories and 20 research centers (e.g., YTÜ Teknopark) support practical skills. YTÜ is active in TÜBİTAK projects and is known for its scientific productivity.

Campus and Technological Infrastructure

Yıldız Technical University’s main campuses are Yıldız and Davutpaşa. Yıldız Campus is located in Beşiktaş on a 120,000 m² historic site, while Davutpaşa Campus in Esenler spans 1.2 million m² of modern facilities. The campuses feature over 80 buildings totaling 350,000 m² of indoor space, with both historical and contemporary architectural designs. High-speed internet and smart classrooms form the core of technological infrastructure. Libraries provide access to over 500,000 printed resources and more than 1 million digital publications, with a capacity exceeding 2,000 people. Research facilities include advanced laboratories in engineering and chemistry, providing strong infrastructure for scientific work.

Dormitories

YTÜ offers accommodation for 2,500 students at Davutpaşa Campus and additional dormitories in cooperation with KYK. Rooms house 2-4 students and include beds, wardrobes, desks, and internet access. Dormitories feature laundry facilities, kitchens, and study rooms. Security is ensured with 24-hour camera surveillance, and regular cleaning is performed. Canteens meet basic needs. Dormitories are close to classrooms. Applications are submitted online, and incentives are provided for scholarship students. Dormitories support campus life with a comfortable environment.

Social Life

Yıldız Technical University offers a rich social life. The historic character of Yıldız Campus and the green spaces of Davutpaşa create a peaceful environment. Sports facilities include basketball courts, tennis courts, and fitness centers, with teams achieving success in tournaments. Cafeterias provide daily meals; vegan options are limited but available upon request. There are over 100 student clubs (e.g., YTÜ Robotics Club), along with conferences, exhibitions, and festivals. Yıldız Campus in Beşiktaş is accessible by metro (M2), bus, and ferry. Davutpaşa Campus in Esenler is reachable via metrobüs and bus lines. Atatürk Airport is 20 km away and Sabiha Gökçen Airport is 45 km away, with public transportation discounts available through IstanbulKart.

Student Support Services

YTÜ provides internship and job opportunities through its Career Center and organizes “Career Days.” Academic advisors guide students in course selection and career planning.
