Scientific Research Projects (BAP) Support in Turkey

What is scientific research and who can apply for it

Turkey’s universities and research institutions have developed the Scientific Research Projects (BAP) system to support scientific research. BAP grants aim to enable academics, master’s and doctoral students to produce new knowledge, improve existing theories or find solutions to social problems.

In a nutshell, BAP is a kind of “academic grant” program. But not everyone can apply. The following people are usually suitable:

  • Full-time teaching staff at universities
  • Master’s and doctoral students (through their advisors)
  • Sometimes researchers from university research centers

For example, as clearly stated on Anadolu University’s BAP page, each institution has its own application criteria. Therefore, whichever university you are applying to, you should definitely check the announcements of the BAP Coordination Unit there.

The good thing is that BAP projects are not only about “science”, but also cover different fields such as art, engineering, health sciences, etc.

Scientific Research Projects Application Process

At first glance, getting scientific research project support can seem a bit complicated. When I first applied, I was stuck for hours filling out the form! But actually the process is quite systematic when you follow certain steps.

Here is the general application process:

StepDescription
Determining a Project TopicDevelop an original research idea on your topic of interest.
Project WritingWrite details such as purpose, methodology, expected results, etc.
ApplicationThe project is uploaded to the EBAP (electronic application) system of the university.
Ethics Committee ApprovalIf there is a study on humans or animals, approval is obtained from the ethics committee.
EvaluationThe project is examined scientifically and financially by the BAP Commission.
Conclusion and ContractIf the project is accepted, the contract is signed and the support payment is made.

Applications usually ask for:

  • Detailed project file
  • Budget plan
  • Calendar
  • Advisor approval if you are a student

The process is very similar for national grants such as TUBITAK 1001 Scientific and Technological Research Program, but the budgets and durations are slightly larger. For example, in TUBITAK 1001, the project duration can be up to 36 months.

By the way, a little tip: Some universities offer additional trainings or seminars on scientific research project writing techniques. Participation is a serious advantage!

BAP Opportunities for International Students

The doors of scientific research projects are wide open for foreign students studying in Turkey! Especially master’s and doctoral students can easily benefit from BAP funds for thesis projects or independent research.

For example, Pamukkale University provides financial support to students in the thesis process through the BAP system, but there is a critical detail here: the support is only valid during the normal period of study. So if you extend the program, BAP support may be cut. It is very important to know this from the beginning and adjust your work plan accordingly.

Thanks to BAP grants, many international students have collected thesis data, conducted laboratory experiments or financed field research. For example, a friend of mine did field studies and presented a paper at an international congress with the BAP budget. Receiving scientific research project support makes a significant contribution to academic CV not only in Turkey but also worldwide.

In addition to BAP, there are other funding opportunities for PhD students in Turkey. If you are looking for more funding, be sure to check out our guide on Funding Support for PhD Students in Turkey. There are many alternatives here, from TÜBİTAK projects to institutional scholarships.

Also, if you want to do research, you can learn more about TUBITAK Scholarships and Research Funds: You can learn about TÜBİTAK’s support in our Comprehensive Guide article and make your research stronger with additional funding sources other than BAP.

All these opportunities make Turkey an attractive center for international students, not only for education but also for developing scientific careers.

Almost every public university in Turkey and many foundation universities have their own BAP Coordination Unit. However, some universities offer larger budgets and more project opportunities in terms of scientific research project support.
