Getting a residence permit in Turkey is the first step to staying in this beautiful country as a student or employee. However, sometimes plans may change or unwanted situations may occur. In this article, I share detailed information about the reasons for residence permit revocation, the post-revocation process and the e-Residency system.
Why is a Residence Permit Cancellation in Turkey?
Revocation of a residence permit in Turkey becomes inevitable in some cases. For example:
- Crimes that threaten public order in Turkey
- Falsifying documents or making false statements
- Exceeding the duration of the residence permit and not submitting the required documents
Especially during my stay as a student, I realized how important it is to submit all the documents related to residency permit cancellation. For more details, you can visit our Residency permit application in Turkey page.
What Happens After Residence Permit Cancellation?
If your residence permit is revoked, the consequences can be serious. In the table below, I have summarized the most common post-cancellation processes:
| Process | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Deportation Decision | It is the most common outcome after a residence permit revocation. The foreigner may be forced to leave the country. |
| Appeal and Legal Assistance | You can take legal action to appeal the decision. It is recommended that you seek legal advice. |
| Re-application | Depending on the reason for the cancellation, you may be entitled to re-apply. |
Note: After a revoked residence permit, you must leave Turkey within the given period (usually 10-30 days). If you don’t, you could face deportation and criminal penalties.
A friend of mine wrote to me in a panic when her student residence permit was canceled, “What am I going to do now?” We managed this process by starting an appeal process with the help of a lawyer. It can be a really stressful period, but it can be overcome if you have a clear road map.

Identity Card for International Students in Turkey
After obtaining a residence permit in Turkey, the process of obtaining a Foreigner Identity Card (FIC) begins.
How to Get a Foreigner ID Card
After your residence permit is approved, the Immigration Authority will prepare a card and send it to your address by PTT cargo, usually within 1-2 weeks. On the card:
- Name and surname
- Sleepy scholar
- Photograph
- Foreigner Identification Number (FIN)
It takes place. In order to get this card, you must have completed the e-Residency application correctly and register your address at the appointment. If you give the wrong address during address registration, the card will not arrive; I experienced this once, my card went to another address, it took a week to find it.
What You Can Do With Your Foreigner ID Card
This card is very important for official transactions, health services and banking in Turkey. Here is a short list of things you can do with the card:
- You can open a bank account
- You can get a mobile line
- You can take out health insurance
- University registration and get a student card
Reasons for Deportation and Legal Rights in Turkey
The process of deportation is the most feared thing when a residence permit is revoked. It is very important to understand this process and know your legal rights.
Reasons for Deportation
The most common reasons for deportation are:
- Exceeding the duration of a residence permit
- Working in Turkey without obtaining the necessary permits
- Involvement in crimes against public order
- Using false documents or making false statements
Deportation Process and Rights
If a deportation order is issued, the Immigration Authority will inform you in writing and usually give you 15 days’ notice. If you do not leave Turkey within this period, you will be forcibly deported.
But don’t worry, you have the right to appeal this decision. You can appeal against the deportation decision of the Immigration Authority to a criminal judge of peace. The court process takes 15-30 days on average. Getting legal support will help you a lot in this process. For legal assistance in Turkey, you can get support from Turkish Bar Association.
