History and Vision of the University

Ankara University was established in 1946 as Turkey’s first university under Law No. 4936. Its foundations were laid with institutions such as the School of Law, opened in 1925, and the Faculty of Agriculture, established in 1933. Ankara University is one of the pioneers of the Republic in the field of education. Officially founded in 1946, the university currently operates with 18 faculties. Led by Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Ünüvar, Ankara University operates under the motto “Shaping the Future with Science.” Its vision is to become a leading research university both nationally and internationally. Its mission is to educate individuals who think critically, are innovative, and contribute to society. With approximately 66,000 students (YÖK Atlas, 2022-2023), Ankara University ranks in the 601-800 band in the Times Higher Education 2025 ranking. Education

Ankara University offers a wide academic range with its 18 faculties: Law, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Veterinary, Agriculture, Science, Engineering, Theology, Communication, Educational Sciences, Political Sciences, Fine Arts, Sports Sciences, Health Sciences, Language and History-Geography, Applied Sciences, and Open and Distance Education. There are more than 120 undergraduate and over 200 graduate programs. Medicine, Law, and Veterinary programs are particularly prominent. The academic staff consists of approximately 3,800 faculty members who are expert scholars. The education model combines theoretical and practical learning, and some programs are offered in English. Campus and Technological Infrastructure

Ankara University has 10 campuses: Tandoğan, Cebeci, Sıhhiye, Gölbaşı, Beypazarı, Kalecik, Çankaya, Bala, Elmadağ, and Ayaş. Tandoğan Campus hosts administrative units in its 50,000 m² central area, while Gölbaşı Campus covers 1.2 million m² with modern facilities. The buildings feature both historical and contemporary architectural designs. Campuses are equipped with high-speed internet and smart classrooms; technological infrastructure is advanced. Libraries hold over 1 million printed resources and a vast digital archive, with a capacity exceeding 3,000 people. Dormitories

Ankara University offers dormitory facilities in cooperation with KYK around its campuses. The Milli Piyango Dormitory in Tandoğan and other dormitories in Gölbaşı serve more than 5,000 students. Rooms accommodate 2-6 students and include beds, wardrobes, desks, and internet access. Dormitories also feature laundry facilities, kitchens, and study rooms. Security is ensured with 24-hour camera surveillance, and regular cleaning is performed. Canteens provide basic needs. Applications are submitted through KYK’s online system, and incentives are offered for students with scholarships. Dormitories are conveniently located near campuses.

Social Life

Ankara University offers a vibrant social life. Green areas, walking paths, and relaxation spaces create a peaceful environment on campuses. Sports facilities include football fields, tennis courts, and fitness centers, with teams achieving success in tournaments. Cafeterias provide daily meals; vegan options are limited but available upon request. There are over 70 student clubs (e.g., Theater Club), conferences, exhibitions, and festivals. Tandoğan Campus is 2 km from the city center and accessible by metro (M1), buses, and minibuses. Gölbaşı Campus is 20 km away and reachable via EGO buses. Free shuttle services operate between campuses. Bicycle paths and parking areas are available. Esenboğa Airport is 30 km away and accessible by HAVAŞ. Public transportation is discounted with AnkaraKart.
