Istanbul Technical University (ITU): ITU’s Department of Nanotechnology and Nanoscience has one of the most comprehensive research infrastructures in Turkey. Open to international students at both master’s and doctoral levels.

Let’s look at the technical side of things: In these departments, you usually take courses where physics, chemistry and biology are intertwined. In the first year, you start with basic engineering education, but then the subject deepens with courses such as micro and nanoscale structures, semiconductors, biomaterials, etc.

One of the most challenging courses for me was undoubtedly “Quantum Mechanics for Nanoscience”. But these challenges also push you to really research and think. There are usually plenty of laboratory hours and this is a great advantage to put theoretical knowledge into practice.

Programs usually last 4 years (undergraduate) or 2 years (graduate). In graduate programs, thesis work is of great importance. Thanks to TÜBİTAK scholarships and Erasmus+ agreements, which are especially open to international students, there are also many research opportunities abroad.

What Happens After Graduating from Turkey

I can say that the career paths for Nanotechnology and Materials Science graduates are almost limitless. Because this field directly affects many sectors such as medicine, energy, space technologies, electronics, and even textiles. When I was studying in Istanbul, a few of my friends founded start-ups with TUBITAK projects; one of them is producing biosensors, one is working on solar panel materials. I chose a more classical path and started working as an R&D engineer in a corporate company. I’m glad I did, because I had the chance to improve my technical English in the field.

In Turkey, it is possible to find a job immediately after graduation, as the cooperation between industry and universities is strong. In particular, institutions such as ASELSAN, ROKETSAN, TÜBİTAK MAM, Arçelik prefer graduates specialized in nanomaterials and surface engineering.

Many students who want to pursue a master’s degree in Europe receive great support from their professors in terms of reference letters.
