Aksaray University: Overview and Vision

Aksaray University was established in Aksaray on March 17, 2006, by Law No. 5467. It began its academic journey by separating from the affiliated units of Niğde University. Founded under the leadership of its first rector, Prof. Dr. Necdet Sağlam, the university is currently led by Prof. Dr. Alpay Arıbaş (since 2023). With the slogan “Thinking globally, respecting the local,” it adopts a vision centered on scientific research and social contribution. Its mission is to support regional and national development through innovative education. As of the 2022–2023 academic year, the university has approximately 20,000 students (YÖK Atlas) and is ranked in the 801–1000 band in the Times Higher Education 2025 rankings. Aksaray University is especially recognized for its programs in sports sciences and health.

Education

Aksaray University comprises 12 faculties: Education, Arts and Sciences, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Engineering, Islamic Studies, Communication, Health Sciences, Sports Sciences, Tourism, Veterinary Medicine, Fine Arts, and Applied Sciences. In addition, it includes 3 institutes (Science, Social Sciences, and Health Sciences), 1 school, and 6 vocational schools. It offers over 100 undergraduate and associate degree programs and more than 50 graduate programs. The Engineering and Sports Sciences faculties are particularly notable for their English-taught options. With around 800 academic staff, both theoretical and practical education are delivered. Campus and Technological Infrastructure

The university’s main campus, known as the Central Campus, is located along the Adana Road, about 7 km from the city center, covering an area of 2,000 acres. It features 400,000 m² of indoor space, high-speed internet, and smart classrooms. The library offers access to 200,000 printed resources and over one million digital publications, with a seating capacity of 1,500. Facilities like the Rıza Kayaalp Sports Hall, semi-Olympic swimming pool, and a cycling velodrome stand out. The Technology Development Zone strengthens university-industry cooperation. Accommodation

Aksaray University collaborates with KYK dormitories located around the campus. Over 5,000 beds are available near the Central Campus. Rooms accommodate 2–6 students and are equipped with beds, wardrobes, desks, and internet access. Dormitories also feature laundries, kitchens, and study rooms. Security is maintained 24/7 via surveillance systems, and cleaning services are conducted regularly. Applications are submitted through the KYK system, with scholarship students receiving priority. Private dormitories and rental housing options are also available.

Social Life

Aksaray University offers a dynamic social environment. The green spaces, sports fields, and modern facilities of the Central Campus are appealing. Sports facilities include areas for basketball, volleyball, and swimming; university teams compete in various tournaments. Dining halls provide daily meals, and campus cafes offer variety. With over 50 student clubs (including music and sports), festivals, and the annual “Spring Festival,” student engagement is encouraged. The university’s on-campus Health Center provides basic healthcare services, supported by 24/7 ambulance availability. Although the university does not have a medical faculty, it collaborates with the local Training and Research Hospital. The Psychological Counseling Unit offers individual therapy sessions, with appointments scheduled online. Security is ensured 24/7 through surveillance systems and on-site personnel, with controlled campus entry and exit.

Transportation

The Central Campus of Aksaray University is located 7 km from the city center. It is easily accessible via municipal buses, minibuses, and campus shuttle services. It is 80 km from Nevşehir Airport and 5 km from the main bus terminal. Public transport is discounted for students. Bicycle paths and parking lots are also available on campus.
